Multicultural Holiday Merit Badge

 

OBJECTIVE: To learn something new about cultures around the world.

REQUIREMENT: Study any holiday from a culture other than your own; some are listed below.

PROCEDURES
• Choose a culture that you are interested in learning more about.
• Online, research their holidays and choose one (or more). Include background information such as
o Origins of the holiday
o Culture’s background and people
o Main aspects of the holiday, including food, celebrations, activities, music, etc
• Make a display that teaches Alisal students about the culture (examples are colorful posters, bulletin boards, and power points). The finished project will be displayed publicly, so make sure you’ve done your best.
• Site all of your sources. If you’re unsure about how to do this, see your English teacher.
• Lastly, prepare or purchase a food that represents the culture. You will be presenting your presentation to academy teachers and students and will need to bring this dish on the day of your presentation.

VERIFICATION
• Present and publicly display your culture to an academy class.
• Bring and share food and music.
• Have an academy teacher sign and check off your online sources.

Possible holidays to research: Hanukkah, Kwanza, Ramadan, St. Patrick’s Day, Chinese New Year, Rosh Hashanah, May Day, Carnival, Oktoberfest, European Christmas, Ice Lantern Festival, Corpus Christi, Varadero Carnival, Ascension, among thousands of other holidays.
