Community Education
Merit Badge
Objectives:
We all have the
responsibility to help our community, and share our knowledge when
needed. That community can be
our town, neighborhood, friends, family, school or
Academy. One struggle in
educating others is finding a way to reach the public in a way
they will understand and
respond to. Completing this certificate means the student has
found a unique way to be
successful at reaching and educating others about a specific
health or human services
field, problem or topic.
Education of the
community can be done, but is not limited to, the following ways:
Mock Election or Mock trail: see Academy government teacher
Postpone
Peer mentor- Join the
postpone club, get trained to give talks about STD and preventing teen
pregnancy
Bulletin Board: create and display a school bulletin
board about a health or human services topic. These topics can be in relation
to National Health observance days (i.e. October is National Breast Cancer
month) or any area the student wants to educate their peers about.
Health
Clinic volunteer – some
of the local health clinics ask for volunteers to give talks to students or
community members about different health topics
Fair Booth/Table: the student can spend time creating and
working at a booth in a public “fair” for any health or human services topic or
agency. This would involve speaking with the public, and giving out useful
information about the subject. The county Health Department has two or three a
year. Call them, or ask your ROP or health teacher to help.
Blood

examples of duties below)
