For Students

Fact: Mentors DO NOT get paid to be mentors.
Fact: Mentors use precious time to be with their students.

Question: “So why do they do it?

Answer: Because they are good people, each with something to say to a young person. They have learned about life and their information is valuable. They want to share knowledge and experience with you. Mentors are people who care. They are proving it by becoming involved with you.

Some advice:
Don’t be shy. Are you a little nervous about meeting your mentor? Last years juniors were! Believe it or not, last years mentors were REALLY nervous about interacting with teenagers. Many if them were afraid that their students wouldn’t like them! You can make them feel at ease by being at ease yourself. Talk to them like you would to any one of your friends. No big deal. You don’t have to sell them on being a mentor-they have already decided to! Remember that they are here because they want to work with you.

Ask questions. The purpose of having a mentor is to learn a littler about the “real world” and how it works. Don’t be afraid that your mentor will think you are ignorant if you don’t know something. Each and every mentor is there to help! They want YOU to ask them things.

So, what's the student's role?
Ask Questions:
If the mentor does not know the answers, he or she will know where to find them!

Be Interested:
No matter what the mentor exposes to you, enjoy it. Take advantage of the fact that you are being exposed to new things, even if these things are not "your thing".

Make Your Mentors Feel at Home:
Talk to them! Include them! Introduce them to friends. They are here for you. Do not brush them off to go with your friends. If your friends are around, make sure that they are included in what ever you and your friends are doing or talking about.

Thank Your Mentors:
Thank them for everything. Let them know how much you appreciate their time, help, and interest in you.

Write Letters/Email:
Every two weeks each of you will be writing a letter to each other to let you know how you two are doing. Your mentor will love this.

Invite Your Mentors to Your Extracurricular Activities:
Ask them to go to any sporting event or any other out of school activity you do. They may not be able to go, but it never hurts to ask.

These are the kind of people that know what is important, people who will make a difference in this world. Think about it- - how many people do you know that would give up their free time to be with you?

Want to know how to keep your mentor happy? It's easy. They want to talk to you, get to know you and help you. Let them!
