Student Testimonial
My experience in the Academy
By Mario Vargas, class of ‘08
If you are wondering what the students in the Human Services Academy are doing, well now is your chance! In the Human Services Academy, the students get to have lots more opportunities for college. For example, in the Human Services Academy students must do five merit badges each year (15 in total) to get the Certificate of Mastery which will impress the interviewers when the students apply for college. The Certificate of Mastery is evidence that the student has excellent employability skills. In the HSA, we also go on field trips to the two local hospitals like we did just last November. The trips were a success, the students got to go and see if they really want to study in the field of medicine.
On the last HSA trip, the students got to observe the different fields of medicine. A few of the fields that the students got to see were the nursery were they keep the babies, the X-ray room and to the lab were the doctors try finding cures for current viruses and keep frozen organs. This spring the HSA students will take another trip to the hospital that they did not attend in November since we split the class into two groups. In the summer the students are also able to work in the hospital as a volunteer.
Another thing that is very important in the HSA is to pass the CAHSEE the first time, get no D’s or F’s, and to go to college. A way that the HSA helps us with this is that the teachers make sure the students practice by giving them essays. The HSA is also going to start parent teacher conferences for students who are failing and make them go to tutorial. Also, when the HSA students get to their senior year they must fill out a college applications. Another thing that the HSA offers is that for the people who complete all their merit badges for the year get to go on a field trip of their choice for a whole day and get cool prizes.
The best parts of being in the HSA isn’t just for what you learn or for the experience but for the following. One, you get to go on exciting field trips and to meet new people. Two, the teachers you get are real friendly and you will get used to them, but if you don’t that’s too bad cause you will have them through senior year. Three, when you go on field trips you will get senior mentors that are real cool and will tell you everything about their experience. One of the best parts though is that the teachers actual make sure that you get to college unlike other teachers who just want to get paid.
As you probably guessed if there is a good thing there are bad parts, but they’re not bad enough for you to not join. In my opinion a bad thing would be is that the first ROP class you take is chosen by the HSA, but you get the next class to choose for your self. Another thing is that you might have the same problem I had which was that you don’t know about the HSA because you just got recommended by a teacher from freshmen year or if you do know you can always sign up on your own. The last problem I would say it is more like a question, do academy students have to want to be interested in the health fields in the future?
As I wrap this up just keep this in mind if you’re a freshmen, if you want to learn more about the different health fields, guarantee passing the CAHSEE and keeping a good GPA with cool teachers then you should join the HSA.
